Should the Driving Age Be Raised to 18?

Should the driving age be raised to 18?

This question has been around since I learned to drive in the mid 80's, and probably longer than that. It is a question that has sparked much controversy, with valid arguments from both sides of the fence. It has also caused much angst for many a teen, as rumors are constantly flowing from older teens to younger teens about how the law has already changed. Well, the fact is, that in most places the law has not changed, at least not yet.

I definitely have an opinion on this issue, but I am very interested in hearing what you think about it. This is, by no means, an exhaustive list, but here are some things to consider before posting your comments:

Safety Concerns

Safety concerns are the driving force behind most proponents of raising the driving age. The statistics for newly licensed 16 year olds are alarming. Studies report that this group is 6 to 10 times more likely to have a collision than a 25-70 year old. Driving is also the leading cause of death for this age group. There are also some surprising new studies that show that the brain of a 16 year old is less developed, and has higher levels of chemicals related to taking risks, than the brain of an 18 year old. However, there are few studies that document the driving of newly licensed 18 year olds, or 25 year olds for that matter. So we can't really be 100 percent sure if it is the age of the driver, or just the fact that the driver is newly licensed, that results in these alarming statistics. We all want to save lives, but will raising the driving age save lives, or simply delay the inevitable?

Educational Concerns

The current laws in most states require that drivers under the age of 18 do some sort of required education before they receive a license. These are typically referred to as graduated driver licensing programs (GDLs). Currently, they are required by 36 states with that number growing all the time. The GDLs usually consist of some sort of classroom driver education, followed by behind the wheel training and/or practice with parents. There may be a waiting period, and often times these GDLs will impose some driver restrictions for up to a year after receiving a license. There is little doubt that these programs work. There have been countless studies that show a reduction in the death rates of newly licensed teens of anywhere from 11-35 percent when compared to states with no GDL programs. However, all of the states imposing these programs on the teens under 18 waive them for any adult. The only requirement for anyone 18 or over is to pass the tests. So, a more important question might be if a state plans on increasing the driving age to 18, will they also impose the GDL systems on those 18 year olds, or will the 18 year olds continue to be exempt from getting an education. Even if they did impose GDLs to adults, who will perform the required practice with these adults now that the parents are probably out of the picture.

Economic Concerns

Will raising the driving age to 18 be good or bad for the economy? If we look within the economic microcosm of the family, many families rely on older siblings to help relieve the burden of driving kids all over the universe. However, maybe money could be saved if they didn't have to pay for that extra car and insurance. When looking at the greater economy, I read one article where the writer claimed that a reduction in congestion on the roads would be good for the economy. My economically deficient brain can't wrap itself around that concept, but there may be something to it. On the other hand, imagine the implications of suddenly removing all those drivers from the picture. There would be fewer cars sold, fewer insurance policies purchased, and less spent on gas and maintenance items. This would be especially difficult during the transition of the first few years after the law changed, but it's implications could be long lasting as it would mean that every driver on the road would be losing 2 years of spending on these items over the course of their lifetimes. It would also mean fewer trips to the movies, restaurants, WalMarts, and 7-11s for all these kids. It sounds like lost revenues and lost jobs for many industries to me. But we are talking about saving lives!

I would be against raising the driving age to 18 if it meant creating an entire population of uneducated drivers. This is especially true when I consider the economic implications of such a law change. However, I would not be so opposed to re-visiting the idea if the states would come up with a mandatory education program for new drivers of any age. I just don't see how they could make an effective education model without the participation of the parents/guardians. The only way would be to implement a mandatory training program such as that in some European countries. However, these require 30+ hours of in car training with a professional driving instructor, and usually cost several thousand dollars. Since the invention of the automobile, parents in the United States have been involved in the training of their new teen drivers. Some parents are better at this than others, but I feel that this should continue to remain the most important part of a new driver's education process. If anything, there should be more time spent practicing with parents, not less time. Raising the driving age to 18 would result in no practice for new drivers. You could potentially be sending your children off to college without any driving experience at all. As driving instructors, we have clearly seen the devastating results of no practice. It is practice, practice, practice that determines whether or not a teen will beat the statistics, or be a statistic.

What do you think?

as a teenager, i of course want to get my license sooner than later. if i had to wait til im 18, i would just want to get it as soon as possible, so i wouldn't bother to take lessons. i probably wouldn't be the world's safest driver, but i would be legal. i like that with the current laws, they make sure i take training behind the wheel. its better this way. yes we get our licenses sooner and some people dont like that but, at least we have training.

Should teenagers head off to college with that new car they got as their graduation girl with no driving experience? No! that is why we need to get our license before 18. I need all the practice I can get before I head off to uncharted waters. So please leave the driving age alone. THANKS!

Even 18 year old have to take behind the wheel and classroom training. i thank that raising the driving age will create safter, less congested highways, and help keep young drivers safe. Everyone needs to be fully prepaired to drive, not just be able to get them because their 18, it doesnt work like that.

I am 18 and i have witnessed many of my friends gettting into car accident. I was actually in an accident with a friend of mine and we were very lucky yhat none of us where seriuosly hurt. I understand that to mist teens, driving is a right of passage type of thing, but is it worth risking your life? If the age was increased, there would be less accidents and less parents mourning over the loss of their child. Honestly, i don't think i would've minded to have to wait until now to drive. I feel that it is better for everyone, and is a preventer of death.

There is no doubt that the driving age should be raised. I don't think even 18 is old enough, it should be more like 20. Cars are incredibly dangerous.

No, raising the driving age to 18 years old is not the answer! Age is not why people get into accidents, it is driving experience! If we get our license at 18, the new accident rate would be infact, 18 years old. We should get our permits sooner and have more driving experience before we turn 16 years old. Just think of the economic problems we will have. Fewer jobs for driving schools, car manufactures, gas places, insurance companies.

At 18, our kids can vote, and go off to WAR, but we won't let them drive? INSANE!!! Teach them.....instill in them the dangers, along with the good things, show them reality, and let them grow. We are all better for it. I have 2 boys that got their lisences at 16, and 2 girls waiting to get theirs. The oldest now has his Comml Drivers Liscense...... Experience is the KEY...learn it.....and always teach preparedness....watch out for the 'other guy'.

This is not right..... at all. are you kidding me??
never in a million years, would be start wanting to use this rule, yeah maybe old people..... But not the younger. This is ridiculous, by for over bored. OKAY.
Lets get a little reallistic, and start talking serious. How many people, honestly, want to be driving there 17 year old kid around, on a friday night, or saturday? Not much, my parents keep telling me they cant wait for me to driver, and dying for me to go take my test. Im agreeing with the mom above, its insane, and my mom is saying the same thing. Its driving, not war. Its a few hours out, wiht the music on, jamming wiht your friends, not life or death. Kids should be allowed to drive at 16, lets keep it the way it should be.

Rasing the age would do nothing I got my DL at 16 and I really didn't know what to do in alot of situations not because of age but because of a lack of training. I started street racing when I was 17 and honestly it tought me me more about driving than anything you learn very fast in the street racing world you gotta be totaly alert for people pulling out, cop's, you gotta be looking and thinking a mile ahead and the habit stays with you. You learn how to handle the car aswell most drivers panic when they loose traction but to me its no differnt than when my car "steps out" and I know how to resolve the situation safely.

After doing my school project I realized that when I'm not fully developed in the brain, hormones in my right temple that control my senses of what to do and 77% of teens get in minor to fatal accidents and I realized how much my family would miss me so i want to wait until I'm 18 teen and so should you and your children so your family will not miss anybody because of an crash or an accident. So buckle up and drive safe it's the law!!!!! :)

i think that the driving age should not be reaisd to 18 cuz then kids that are about to turnn 16 are so excited to get a car, and have waited all their life to get a car to get around. ppl need a car to get to school n work without reliying on a bus. wit a cazr ppl can drive anywhere they want, any time they want, on their own time. i think cars are more reliable than busses, cuz ur on ur own schedule, n do stuff on ur own time

Yes, ideally it would be raised to 21. Benefits of raising driving age to 18. 1. Cut the number of deaths. The highest death rate for drivers is amongst the age group 17-25. Accidents are most likely to occur in the age 17-18.

Raising the driving age to 17 or 18 might save lives. NZ's driving age (currently 15) was raised to 16 effective in mid-2011, and it will also be a bit tougher to get a license.

Its clear and understandable, 50 states prohibit 16-year-olds from drinking alcohol, buying cigarettes, and purchasing
handguns. Yet somehow most states are willing to put them in charge of a car, which could
potentially be a deadly weapon to anyone.

The proposition forgets that drivers are not "let loose" on the roads, but that they must take a test first to ensure their driving proficiency. And to generalise and say that 17 year olds are immature is wrong. In fact, many boy-racers are over the age of 20 at least. Look at the presenters and audience of Top Gear.

Young drivers, especially male teens, have a much higher probability of an accident than other drivers. Maybe it's the age, or maybe better education, but what is important is that we create a safe process for putting our young drivers on the road. Our company focuses on this too. Maybe this information can be useful to some: www.ironpointinsurance.com/teendrivers.html

Thanks for the post.
